Visit of Suvereto and Bolgheri

The Etruscan coast extends from Livorno to Piombino and we will travel heading towards Suvereto. An evocative medieval borgo with its circuit of walls still intact, the houses in the historic center  lovingly restored in recent decades, have taken on the color of the local stone - a living stone similar in character to the Maremmans themselves, used to living in close contact with nature but at the same time open to, and curious about, any novelty. The streets in the centre of the borgo are all still paved with local stone, and really suggestive. Not to be missed during your walk in the hamlet the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) which is one of the most important examples of medieval civic architecture in the Maremma, the church of San Giusto, the church of Saint Michael and the ancient church and monastery of St Francis. Here we will visit one of the most prestigious wineries of the area, built by an important swiss archistar and described as wine cathedral. After a fascinating visit to discover this gem followed by tasting we will continue to Bolgheri: with its old historical center, the typical houses of stone and bricks, rich food and wine shops, small restaurants and taverns, is really an enchanting village and the ultimate destination for Tuscan wine lovers. This is where the Tuscan wine revolution began in the late 1960´s and early 70´s with winery pioneers like Sassicaia leading the way towards a more open minded and ultra high quality approach to winemaking in the region. Today the Bolgheri DOC wine appellation is synonymous with fine wine. The wine cellar we will visit is situated in the center of the village of Bolgheri, in a castle, and It is the oldest cellar of the DOC.
